DESCRIPTION

The Church of Santa Maria delle Carceri stands on the square of the same name next to the impressive Emperor’s Castle. It was built between 1486 and 1495 on the remains of the ancient Stinche prison, by Giuliano da Sangallo at the behest of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The external covering adopts the traditional two-color scheme made of green marble (or serpentine) of Prato and Alberese marble. The inside is of a classical style, and there is the high altar designed by Sangallo himself and the exquisite stained glass windows designed by Domenico Ghirlandaio.
