Sorano, a town of Etruscan origin, is known as the Matera of Tuscany, given the unique way that a number of its buildings are carved directly into the tuff. The surrounding area is rich in Medieval fortifications like Montorio Castle, the Rocca di Castell’Ottieri and Montebuono Castle.
