DESCRIPTION

San Gimignano is a municipality in the province of Siena. The distinctive Medieval architecture of the old town, characterised by its numerous towers, won it its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highest tower is the Torre del Podestà, also named Torre Grossa (54 m). In the old town, bounded by XIII-century walls, there are Piazza della Cisterna, the Duomo, also known as the Collegiata di San Gimignano, and the Town Hall, which currently houses the Civic Museum and the Picture GalleryThe name San Gimignano probably derives from the name of the Bishop of Modena. In Medieval times the town was one of the stopping points on Via Francigena.
