DESCRIPTION

Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is a piazza in the city of Lucca, built on the remains of the ancient Roman amphitheatre, hence its closed elliptical shape. Dating back to Medieval times and called the ‘parlascio’, a distortion of the Latin word paralisium (‘amphitheatre’), it was where town meetings used to be held. It was gradually filled with buildings with various uses, such as a salt warehouse, an armoury, and a prison. In the 19th century it was restructured by Lucchese architect Lorenzo Nottolini.
