DESCRIPTION
Founded at the behest of Cosimo I Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1548, Portoferraio is the capital and the main port on the Island of Elba. The imposing Medici fortifications (Falcone, Stella and Linguella) are a distinguishing feature of the town. Among the historical buildings of interest: the Romanesque-Pisan Church of Santo Stefano alle Trane, the very ancient Etruscan Hillfort of Castiglione, the National Museum of Napoleonic residences, Napoleon’s official residence, when he was exiled to the island in 1814.
