Artists like Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini used Carrara marble to create their works, making it famous throughout the world. In the Carrara marble basin, there are currently 190 quarries, some of which are open to the public, such as the Fantiscritti quarry, an immense amphitheatre carved into the mountain, with an ancient railway station that houses the Museo delle Cave (Quarry Museum).
